Chapter Seven

The news thrust the antique hunt aside with the speed of a runaway bus.

“Sam’s sending us everything he has.” RG opened her laptop and brought up his email account. “It’s a funny world,” he mused.

They stood side by side poring over the information coming through. “Hard to believe, but Wang rented Qiang’s island compound. We clear one set of rats out of the nest and another fills it.”

“Karma always has her way,” Tè responded.

The evening passed with RG on the phone. After a brief face time with Anton, acquainting him with the break, Tè listened as RG began putting together a unit, calling in his men from around the world, juggling assignments, hiring in contract workers, even some mercenaries he knew well.

Over the next days, Tè threw herself into the plans alongside him. She served as liaison with Anton and Josh, making sure their parts of the plan ran on schedule. Elatedly, she would report Anton had just crushed another of Wang’s holding companies, or Jake had just lowered the stock. Josh had easily hacked Eye of the Dragon’s systems, legal and hidden, and Siree was having the time of her life, manipulating the money in them, until more and more of the illegal operations showed up on the legal books.

RG had brought Interpol, the RCMP, the Chinese and American governments, and three other countries in on the chase. They all wanted Wang behind bars for life.

At first she thought they were partners, but then she realized while he kept her busy with paperwork, he was in strategy meetings, planning Wang’s capture. When she asked to join the logistical team, he segued onto another subject, or told her what she was doing was more important for the moment, and he’d catch her up later.

At first, she thought they were lovers, but he didn’t return to her bed or spend time with her through the day. If she was in the office late, he’d politely suggest she call a taxi and go home. Always, he had a few more details to wrap up. The first few nights she waited. Slow coach, she berated herself when midnight passed into zero one hundred on the third night. He’s not coming. He’s pushed anything personal away and gone into warrior mode. It’s all about the hunt now. You’ve become incidental.

At first, when she finally tackled him, he evaded. But this time, she sank her teeth deep into the need to know. This time, her claws held firm, refusing him escape. She fought dirty, blocking the hidden blows her pride had suffered, numbing her feelings for him.

“Admit you’re cutting me out of strategy because you don’t plan on using me,” she accused, squaring off in his office.

He rose from behind his desk, crossed and closed the door, then faced her. Low blow, she thought. He had a definite height advantage, and though fine-boned, his muscled frame made her look like a quail carcass. She knew intimidation tactics. He hoped she’d back down. She lifted her chin, burned him with the accusation in her eyes.
